Chopta is a quaint little hamlet of meadows and evergreen forest that is part of the Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary in Uttarakhand, India. It serves as a starting point for trekking to Tungnath and Chandrashila, the third temple of Panch Kedar, which is 3.5 kilometres away. Chandrashila, a summit with a height of over 4,000 meters, is 1.5 kilometers from Tungnath. Another breathtaking destination included in the tour package is Auli, which literally means meadows. Early morning arrival at Dehradun/Haridwar and proceed towards Chopta. It is situated at a distance of 185 km which usually takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach. Enroute visit Devprayag and Rudraprayag. This is the place where you can witness the confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda river which forms the holiest river of India – Ganga. Do notice the color difference between the two rivers. Arrive in Chopta, check in at your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight stay at Chopta Hotel.
After early morning breakfast, start for the most intriguing day of your Chopta tour. Start your trek to Tunganath (3680 m), meaning the lord of the peaks, visit the highest Shiva Temple in the world - Tunganath temple. It is said to be 1000 years old. The 10 km trek to Chandrashila summit from Tunganath usually takes 2 to 3 hours one way. And did you know Chandrashila literally means "MOON ROCK" This place is known for being associated with many legends and one such claims that this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Whilst the other claims that the Moon-God Chandra spent time here in penance. Spend some time here in peace watching the great Himalayan peaks of Nanda Devi, Trisul, Kedar, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba. Later, start the downward trek and retire into your hotel. Evening free for leisure time. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at Chopta Hotel.
After having breakfast, check out from Chopta hotel and proceed for Sari Village. (56.7 km - 2 to 3 hours of drive). After arriving at Sari, bag your essentials for a small hike of 2 km (one-way) to Deoria Tal. Deoria Tal lake is located on an elevation of 2438 meters, and surrounded by lush green forest and snow-covered mountains. Interestingly, it is said that the Hindu Gods (Devas) use to bath in the lake. Enticed enough to take a bath already? Another interesting fact related to Deoria Tal - the locals say that the lake has been built by Bheem for himself to pacify his thirst as suggested by Yudhishtir. Later, trek down to Sari and after some refreshments drive to Joshimath. (128 km - 5 hours' drive) After the arrival at Joshimath, visit the Narsingh Temple & Shankaracharya Math. Joshimath is also known as Jyotir Math and is famous for being home to one of the four math's established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Narsingh temple is also known as Narsingh Badri Temple and is dedicated to the 4th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. And interestingly, during the winter months, the priests place the idol of Badrinath right by the side of Narsingh idol.
Later, check-in at Auli hotel and prepare yourself for the next days’ adventure.
Start early today and after breakfast, tighten your shoes to explore the beautiful destination of Gorson Bugyal. A short hike to Gorson Bugyal takes you to an altitude of 3519 meters. (Only 1.5 km from the top tower of the gondola ride) Spend some time soaking the vastness of the greater Himalayas. Also, visit the Auli artificial lake and ski point and ride the cable car to get a bird’s eye view of Auli. (On Own) Dinner and overnight stay at Joshimath/Auli.
After breakfast, pack your bags and bid adieu to your co-Travelers and start for Haridwar or Dehradun.
