Gujarat is home to some of the most varied cultural and historical monuments. In a land which extends from the sea coast to the desert, these landmarks are links in a grand narrative, which has come to shape the history of the living in these regions. Travelers who visit Gujarat don’t just glimpse unique sights, but also imbibe some of the cultural wealth of this land.
Arrive at Ahmedabad Airport/Railway Station to a wholehearted welcome. Soon, you will be ushered onto the 2 hour drive to the wilderness of Little Rann of Kutch. Check-in to hotel, before visiting the Banjaras and Rabaris, the two dominant tribes of the region. While the Rabari are nomadic cattle herders, the Banjaras have given up their constant roaming for a life of subsistence agriculture. Return to a relaxing evening. With breakfast done, time to head to Dwarka. Stopover for a look at Jamnagar’s exotic hand crafted goods and the Lakhota Lake. It attracts about 75 species of birds. Lakhota Palace Museum on a lake island offers a sweeping view of history. Visit Bala Hanuman Mandir, renowned for a chant that’s been on since 1964. Check-in in Dwarka and check out Dwarkadeesh Temple, which is built on soft limestone of Gomti Creek. Overnight stay in Dwarka.
Morning begins with a satisfying breakfast. Later, we head to Dwarka Bet, what is believed to be the last remnant of the submerged city of Dwarka. You can indulge yourself in a variety of ways, with great picnicking and camping spots on offer, from where you could even spot a few dolphins. Wind down in the evening. Overnight stay in Dwarka.
After breakfast, leave Dwarka. First stop is Porbandar’s Kirti Mandir, dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. Also visit Sudama Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna’s devoted friend, Sudama. Arrive and check-in at the mythical city of Somnath. At Bhalka Tirth, pay obeisance to Lord Krishna. Take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, where Rivers Saraswati, Hiranya and Kapila flow into the sea. Wind down with visits to Geeta Mandir and Somnath Temple. Overnight stay in Somnath.
It’s Diu calling after breakfast on Day 5. After a 2 hour drive, arrive and check-in. The first destination on the itinerary is St.Paul’s cathedral, which proclaims its magnificence with towering white spires. Also recommended is a visit to the museum inside St. Thomas’ church, a cynosure of local history. In the evening, take to the beach, in time for the sublime sunset. Overnight stay in Diu.
Another great breakfast later, set off for the village of Sasan Gir. Check-in upon arrival. Head to the Gir Interpretation Zone, set up 12 kms away at Devaliya. Here, you get to view a neat cross section of the wildlife available at Gir, while helping in reducing the tourism load on Gir itself. Return to a relaxing evening. Overnight stay in Sasan Gir.
It’s farewell Sasan Gir after breakfast. Start on the way to Bhavnagar. On the way, stop at Palitana, which has become a historical city of temples. With more than 1300 temples carved into the side of the Shatrunjaya Hills. After a look at this sprawling artefact, proceed to Bhavnagar, a modern industrial town. Check-in and relax, before paying a visit to Takhteshwar Temple, settled on a hillock. Overnight stay in Bhavnagar.
It’s your last day on this trip to Gujarat. After breakfast, it’s time to drive back to Ahmedabad. On the way, stop by for a look at the prehistoric Lothal archaeological site, which is a remnant of the Indus Valley civilization, no less. Later, proceed to Ahmedabad Railway Station/Airport, to get on your way home.
